The Western Connecticut Military Officers Association (WCMOA) proudly presented its thirty-fifth annual Young American Awards (YAA) Banquet on June 8, 2010 at the Italian Center, Stamford. There were over one hundred attendees, which included WCMOA members, distinguished quests, 15 high school senior nominees and their families.

 

COL Joseph FitzHarris, USA (Ret), Chapter President, presided over the ceremonies. The evening began with the parading of Colors by Stamford’s Westhill High School JROTC Color Guard and the singing of the national anthem by Mrs. Louise Simonetti, wife of LtCol John Simonetti, USAF (Ret), Chapter Vice President. COL Serge Gabriel, USA (Ret) Chapter Chaplain provided the invocation.

 

The distinguished speaker, Mr. William P. Kupper, Jr directed his speech to the 2010 awardees and provided encouragement and congratulatory remarks. Mr. Kupper, President and Publisher of BusinessWeek magazine was awarded the Bronze Star and Air Medal with the First Calvary during the Vietnam War.

 

COL Joseph FitzHarris, USA (Ret) and Mr. Donald Gagnon, program manager of the Sikorsky Aircraft CH-53D/E Sea Stallion Helicopter, presented the awards. Sikorsky Aircraft was a significant sponsor of the Young American Award scholarships.
